Signs of a Healthy Church

Presented as a Connect Group resource for New Covenant Church Bryanston
Released May 2025

We all exhibit certain vital signs as human beings. These are respiration, blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature. In the event that one of these is interfered with, we are in danger of death. Healthy living for a person is dependent on monitoring these vital signs and practicing regular exercise and a good diet. The same can be said of the body of Christ, the Church.

There is a message of a healthy Church to be found in the scriptures. This church is not a building or a location, but a people. You and I make up that Church. A collection of individuals, saved into the Body of Christ. The message of the healthy Church is, of course, to the Church as a whole, but you and I make up this body as individuals. There is a progression towards sanctification that each of us as believers is on. A journey where the Holy Spirit is forming us more and more into a person whose character is like that of Jesus. As we journey through this process as individuals, it leads to a sanctified Church that looks more and more like what God intended it to be.

Favour and Increase

Over the last five weeks, we’ve been journeying together through Acts 2:42–47, unpacking what it looks like to be a healthy Church. Welcome to our final session in this series! In our last session, we explored the practices of hospitality, personal passion, and a lifestyle of worship. This week, we’re focusing on the two powerful results that flowed from the early Church’s devotion:

  • They had favour with all people
  • The Lord added to their number daily

These are not strategies—they are outcomes of a Church walking in health. Let’s lean in together as we unpack what that means for us.
